Sporting Group: These dogs are often used for hunting; includes pointers, retrievers, setters, and spaniels Hound Group: These dogs were also often used for hunting; they have keen senses of smell and are well suited for following a trail. Some hounds are extremely fast and are able to chase and catch prey
Terrier Group: These are dogs originally bred to hunt and kill pests such as rats and mice
Working Group: This diverse group of dogs were bred to do a wide variety of jobs such as guarding property, pulling sleds, and rescuing people
Toy Group: These dogs are characterized by their small size and were bred mainly to be companions
Non-Sporting Group: This group of
dogs is also very diverse; these dogs do not have a "common thread" such as size or occupation to bind them together, but each one is special and unique in its own way Herding Group: These dogs used to be classified under the "Working" group but were moved to their own group because they all have the ability to corral and move herds of animals
